Safer Cookies Plugin For WordPress

As you might know, when you log in to a WordPress blog a session cookie is created that serves as a kind of authentication “key”. This is what lets you stay logged in and access various areas of the dashboard without having to enter your password every time. However, if a hacker was to get this cookie from your computer – e.g. via some kind of cross-site attack – he would be able to use it to get into your blog.

Safer Cookies is a WordPress plugin that ties the session cookie to the user’s IP address, which ensures the cookie can’t be used to access the admin panel from another computer. Use it to make your blog more secure and resistant to hackers. It’s easy – the plugin functions in a “set and forget” manner, just activate it and enjoy 🙂

safer-cookies.zip (1 KB)
Requirements : WP 2.5+

You will need to log in again after you activate this plugin. This is normal and shows that the plugin is working. On the other hand, you probably shouldn’t use this plugin if your IP address changes very often, as you’ll need to log in anew every time that happens.

is this plugin WP 5.0+ compatible?

    Thank you!

  11. Jānis Elsts says:

It hasn’t been tested with WP 5.0. It might still work, but I’m pretty skeptical about that.

Installed this plugin, but after its’ activation whenever I try to login to admin panel it says that I’m not allowed to access page. Website still perfectly works, but I can’t access admin panel anyhow. How do I fix this?

  13. Jānis Elsts says:

You can make WordPress deactivate the plugin by renaming the plugin directory in /wp-content/plugins to something else, like safer-cookies-disabled.

  14. Levent says:

I installed and activated the plugin. As instructed I got disconnected and had to login back to my site.
But after a successful login I couldn’t access to admin pages …./wp-admin/
Is it because I’m using Cloudflare? If so what can I do to avoid it in the future and for other members of the website?

I had to remove old installed plugins and moved them back to original directory until I found safer-cookies was the misbehavior 🙂

  15. Jānis Elsts says:

This plugin is really old and it’s no longer being actively maintained. I don’t know why exactly it didn’t work in your case, but there’s a high chance that it’s just not compatible with the current version of WordPress.

  16. Levent says:

Yes it could be a compatibility issue like you mentioned. Unfortunately I’m any good with coding but I hope someone else spares time and updates this practical plugin
